Our very own VP of Engineering Ed Curran presented a great webinar on Tuesday, Jan. 17 on Performance and Load Testing with Apache’s JMeter.

We’ve included some takeaways for you to utilize for your own load tests, and, for more info, you can watch the webinar in full below, or can view the slidedeck. Ed also wrote a corresponding White Paper on using JMeter that you can read.

Top 3 takeaways from Tuesday’s webinar:

  1. Apache JMeter is a great tool to use for step performance testing. With it, you can test how many simultaneous users can be on your site or application before load time is affected. You can add more users over increments of time to see exactly when the loading time becomes too delayed to be feasible. An example is at 14:13 in the video.
  2. Key parameters/factors help you prioritize site/app functions, which will improve load time. Two reports XBOSoft has found to be useful for helping determine these priorities are Google Analytics’ Page View Report and their Behavior Flow Report. Utilizing these shows you how your users are using different functions. Go to 24:35 to get more details.
  3. Understanding customer expectations is imperative! Knowing your parameters, helps you prevent site downtime, as customer bounce rate increases with load time. Having a dedicated Test Application Server will make testing more manageable — including being able to schedule tests at any time — for prevention purposes. More information on recommendations starts at 35:21.

We’ll also be adding a follow-up post, giving you more info on how to utilize Google Analytics and answering your JMeter questions.
